In My Own Words
“When I play music, I want to be surprised.”
Even on pieces I know very well, I always try to leave room for something unexpected. That's just who I am as a musician. It's also how I started with modular synthesis.
Over the years, I realised I wasn't looking for more control, but for more possibilities. Discovering the idea of co-creation was a turning point because it put words on something I already felt. My music doesn't come only from me. It emerges from the interplay between me and the instrument that can surprise me. The space also plays a part, and sometimes so does sheer accident. That's where co-creation begins. The more deeply I know the work, the more freely I can welcome curiosity, vulnerability, and the unknown.
My work explores the contrast between melody and chaos, as well as the dialogue between improvisation and the unexpected.
Through immersive electronic sonic painting, I invite listeners to slow down, listen closely, and discover unexpected pathways through sound.-YIMÈR
Bio
YIMÈR is the solo project of Brussels-based musician and composer Rémy Schwilden. For over a decade, Rémy Schwilden has been an active presence on the Belgian independent music scene. As guitarist for A Boy With A Beard (2016–2026) and bassist/synthesist (modular) for Sïan Able (2022–2024), he performed extensively throughout Belgium, playing at venues such as Le Botanique and Flagey, and festivals such as LaSemo, Nandrin Festival, Les Solidarités and numerous others.A self-taught musician, his artistic journey began with violin at the age of four before evolving into more than thirty years dedicated to guitar, bass, composition, and sound exploration. Throughout his career, he developed a distinctive musical voice rooted in melody, improvisation, and experimentation.Inspired by rock, indie, jazz and electronic artists, Rémy Schwilden has always sought a balance between structure and freedom. This fascination with the unexpected ultimately led him toward modular synthesis.Since 2019, he has been building a personal artistic practice centered around Eurorack systems, generative composition, deep listening, and sonic exploration. Rejecting conventional approaches to performance, he treats modular synthesis as a living instrument capable of creating evolving musical narratives rather than fixed compositions. His artistic development took a significant step forward through studies in experimental music and modular synthesis with internationally acclaimed artist Sarah Belle Reid and the Learning Sound & Synthesis community. There, he deepened his understanding of generative systems, graphic scores, improvisation, feedback noisy sound, and new listening practices.Through his new solo project, YIMÈR, he creates immersive sound worlds where melody, texture, noise, contemplation, and movement coexist. His compositions emerge from interactions between intention and unpredictability, inviting listeners into contemplative and emotionally resonant sonic environments.YIMÈR's debut album is set for release in February 2027.
